Are Polished Floors Hard to Maintain?

On September 19, 2022

Polished floors can be beautiful, and if you have them in your home, you might feel like you’ve hit the jackpot.

But are polished floors hard to maintain? The answer is no!

Although these floors are not hard to maintain, they do require some upkeep. Here’s what you need to know about keeping your polished concrete floors looking their best.

What Are Concrete Polished Floors?

Polished concrete floors are floors with a coating that makes them look like marble, granite, or another natural stone flooring.

The coating typically consists of epoxy, polyester, or polyurethane. It covers the concrete substrate underneath in multiple layers, sanded down between each layer, and polished to create a shiny finish.

The finished product looks similar to marble, granite, and other natural stones, but it’s much more durable than those materials and is suitable for use in high-traffic exposed spaces.

Why Should You Polish Concrete Floors?

The first thing you should know about polished concrete floors is that they’re very porous, which means they can get dirty easily. This is especially true if your floor is in a high-traffic area with lots of dirt particles.

If you have a lot of dust in your home or office, it’s important to sweep and vacuum your floors regularly. You should also be aware that polished concrete floors will stain easily—especially if they get wet for extended periods! If possible, choose a sealer for your polished concrete floor with a high gloss hydrophobic finish so that water droplets won’t leave marks behind.

How to Maintain Polished Floors

Keep them clean!

Polished floors need regular cleaning, at the very least sweeping and vacuuming at least once a week. This will remove dirt and debris from the surface of your floor so that it doesn’t scratch or discolor over time.

Limit water exposure on your floor

Don’t use too much water when cleaning your floor—you don’t want it to become slippery or damaged! Use enough water to ensure dirt doesn’t stick around for long.

Keep it dry by using a squeegee after every shower or bath. If there’s water on the floor for too long, it can start to crack and chip off over time, which would require more extensive repairs than just sweeping or vacuuming!

Use a neutral-pH floor cleaner

Clean water and a clean mop are all you need to keep your floors clean!

However, if you need to use a cleaner, choose a neutral-PH floor cleaner over other cleaners to avoid damaging the protective surface of your concrete floor. Also, use water or a neutral cleaning product when cleaning up any spills that don’t contain acids or bases.

Use a microfiber mop

Try using a microfiber mop instead of an old rag or sponge mop when mopping your floor. This will help prevent scratches from occurring during use (which can happen if you’re not careful).

Clean spills immediately

Clean spills on your polished concrete floor immediately. If the spill contains any acidic, caustic, or citric liquid—and most do—it can and will result in stains to the polished concrete surface if it’s allowed to remain on the floor for an extended time.

Seal your floor regularly

Thirdly (and perhaps most importantly), you should use a sealer once every year or two years on your polished floors, depending on how often the floors get wet (for example, if it is in a bathroom). This will protect against moisture damage and help keep your concrete looking new for longer!
